Mad Ideas

Ideas and Storyboard

Hello all that are still interested,
This blog should cover my ideas for the 30 second animation task that our lovely lecturer (Gary Bunn) has given us.

The title that I have given for the short animation is called "A day on boar the Millennium Falcon". The reason for the title is that the Falcon is the main star in this short story. Furthermore, it makes it easier for promoting it, when it comes to making posters.

In the picture above, you should see a scanned copy of the storyboard that I had created in order to remember the sequence that the events will happen in.

The story that I had created follows the base of documentaries and classical war films, such as: Memphis Belle and the Battle of Britain. An example of this would be the beginning of the scene where the viewer would see 3 imperial cruisers slowly travelling through space. This is similar to the post "take-off" scene from Memphis Belle, where the viewer could see the swarm of American B-17 bombers, flying on their way to Bremen where they would unload their dangerous cargo.

Furthermore, for my short film, I am thinking of using classical music in order to make the different short scenes more humoresque as there will be death for one of the imperial cruisers` crew.

The models that I had decided to use are:
-Corellian YT-1300 light freighter (Aka: The Millennium Falcon)
Let`s be honest, The main reason to have the Falcon in this movie is that it is probably one of the coolest ships in the cannon. It is also a more challenging ship to model compared to an x-wing or a y-wing as it it not only asymmetrical, but also full of little port holes and differently shaped edges. For example, the top of the falcon has 4 circle shaped holes full of equipment that aids the falcon in some way, while the center and back, contains a square hole, while the other two are an ellipsis and a trapezoid. Nevertheless, the model will probably be heavier in size than the other two, however, there is still a chance to not overdo it as the bottom (which will not be needed for the animation) and some items at the front can be added with the use of a texture. This is because the only close-ups involving the Falcon will be of the side and back. Overall it will be more time consuming that the other two models, nevertheless, it should be joyous to work on.

-TIE/LN Star-fighter (Aka: Tie Fighter)
Probably one of the main reasons to join the imperial navy. The Tie fighter, provides males to try and impersonate the sound it makes when it passes by in order to impress females. Furthermore, it is a relatively simple design to re-create as it has a circular body and large octagonal wings. It is also my second most favorite imperial ship from the original trilogy. Interestingly, it has very little extra bits, so a lot of the items that are on it can be added in the texture, which would in turn reduce the final size of the model, making rendering a less CPU challenging task. The only close-ups this model will have would be of the front, so extra detail will be added for this ship. A cockpit model would also be created (However, this will be needed at a later time).

-Imperial I-class Star Destroyer
This is the second reason to join the imperial navy. The smooth, sailing ship dwarfs many of its adversaries. Commanders of such a ship, receive a very snazzy uniform with which they can impress many members of society. The ship is packed with weapons and contains a tractor beam in order to capture lesser/smaller ships. While the main body is simple to re-create (As it looks like a piece of cheese), the upper deck does provide a slight challenge with all of the little edges and towers. And as a man that can get lost in a car park, following the schematics for this ship would prove to be a demanding task Nevertheless, The ship should be a good challenge for someone (aka: me) that wants to master Maya. Furthermore, smaller detail for the top can be added with the use of textures in order to preserve the amount of vertexes used and the other reason being that the only close-up that this ship will receive will be for its bottom and nose (which will later be split).

And with this concludes today`s news. More will follow soon.
Wishing you a lovely week,
Vasil

A Short Introduction

A short intro

Dear Reader,
I would like to introduce you to my new blog series. The series of blogs that will follow this initial blog would cover my progress, struggles and achievements in comprehending, using and succeeding in creating and designing animations using the brilliant software from Autodesk known as Maya.
The task that is given by my lecturer (Gary Bunn), is to produce a 30 second animation with 3 well detailed models that portray a short story. The theme that has to be followed is Star Wars, which for me is completely ace-biscuits. We also have to document all of our progress, failures and successes on Blogger, which is easy enough for me as I have used it for many previous course related work. I believe that the task will be doable as I am confident at creating short stories with items that are of interest. While, I do not have any skills, with Maya, I do believe that I will be able to quickly grasp the techniques of using such software...after all "How hard can it be?".
This is all for now, more info coming soon.
All the Best,
Vas (2nd Year Computer gaming technoogy student at Anglia Ruskin University).
